7 Day Prayers

Buddhist and Taoist rites will have the 7 day prayers, 3rd 7 day prayers, 5th 7 day prayers and the last 7th day prayers.

These prayers are meant to help the spirit of the deceased to move on.

Many offerings are prepared for the prayers. These include fruits, cakes, flowers, steamed buns, the deceased favourite food and more.

There are also prayer items which will be burned as offerings to the deceased. These can be purchased from a prayer item shop in Chinese majority areas.

100 Day Prayer

Tthe 100 day prayer is when the deceased will be reborn. For Taoist and Buddhist beliefs, the 100 day prayer is very important for the decease to be reborn, and it is recommended to hire a monk for the ceremony.

PERKESO provides funeral assistance funds of RM2500. PERKESO provides next of kin with pension for life.

KWSP (EPF) Claims

Any KWSP Office

EFP provides funeral assistance funds of RM2500. Requires death certificate and can be reported by next of kin or nomimnee. Decease’s EPF funds can only be withdrawn by nominees.

Other Funeral Assistance

Local Council Office or Government Corporations Office

Depends on local governments or government corporations the deceased or next of kin works for.

Sometimes, the local government has funeral assistance of RM1000 for its constituents. These are not there perpetually because it is subject to government funding.

Insurance Claims

Insurance Company Offices

Submit claims for insurance policies owned by deceased. Requires Certificate of Death and nominees to submit claim.

Some insurance policies requires a written medical report from the medical officer who issued the Register of Death.

Step 19

Medical Report for Insurance Claims

Hospital / Clinic

Go to the Hospital or Clinic where the death was reported and pay for a written Medical Report
Hospitals will have a medical reports section where these requests can be made. It takes a month to get the report.

Insurance companies may have their own specific set of forms which needs to be filled. The next of kin will need to hand over these forms to the hospital when requesting for the Medical Report.

Step 20

Appoint Lawyer for Estate Management

Lawyer Office

A lawyer will be required for estate management. If the deceased has a will, then it will be the lawyer who prepared with will.

Get a lawyer whose office is close to the next of kin’s home. There will be multiple trips to the lawyer’s office required.
